چکیده

One of the most promising and challenging future uses of head-mounted displays (HMDs) is in applications where virtual environments enhance rather than replace real environments. To obtain an enhanced view of the real environment, the user wears a see-through HMD to see 3D computergenerated objects superimposed on his/her real-world view. This see-through capability can be accomplished using either an optical or a video see-through HMD. We discuss the tradeoffs between optical and video see-through HMDs with respect to technological, perceptual, and human factors issues, and discuss our experience designing, building, using, and testing these HMDs.

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) can be divided into two categories: opaque (the real world view is totally or partially blocked by the display apparatus) and see-through (the computer image is superimposed onto the real world). Each type has its own uses and advantages, depending on the application. See-through head-mounted displays (STHMDs) can be further subdivided into optical STHMDs and video-...

Optical Versus Video See-Through Head-Mounted Displays in Medical Visualization

We compare two technological approaches to augmented reality for 3-D medical visualization: optical and video see-through devices. We provide a context to discuss the technology by reviewing several medical applications of augmented-reality research efforts driven by real needs in the medical Želd, both in the United States and in Europe. We then discuss the issues for each approach, optical ve...

Single point active alignment method (SPAAM) for optical see-through HMD calibration for AR

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology in which a user’s view of the real world is enhanced or augmented with additional information generated from a computer model. In order to have a working AR system, the see-through display system must be calibrated so that the graphics is properly rendered. The optical see-through systems present an additional challenge because we do not have access to the...

Evaluation of Calibration Procedures for Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays

Optical see-through head-mounted displays (HMDs) are less commonly used because they are difficult to accurately calibrate. In this article, we report a user study to compare the accuracy of 4 variants of the SPAAM calibration method. Among the 4 variants, Stylus-marker calibration, where the user aligns a crosshair projected in the HMD with a tracked stylus tip, achieved the most accurate resu...
